3.3 - Implicit Bias

Unconscious Bias

Our brains, cultures and all of who we are – who God created us to be – are wired to recognize and see color. But what happens when we receive conflicting messages from our families, society and, yes – even the Church about not seeing color? Then, implicit or unconscious biases are created in our minds. And it is these implicit biases that uphold the “I don’t see color” myth. Rev. Dr. David Anderson Hooker explains the science of unconscious bias walking us through how implicit, or unconscious, bias is created and imprinted on each of us – mainly through narratives and meaning making we create about our everyday encounters with human beings and all creation. These narratives often go unexamined and unchallenged and, therefore, become true to us. As Dr. Hooker notes “The blank screen is your life and there are 11 million data points.”
